Is Power BI your choice of tool to build dashboards? Bring catalogs from Atlan to Power BI following these simple steps.


Requirements:-


  1. Power BI Desktop
  2. Power BI Atlan Connector (Download Link)
  3. Presto ODBC Driver (64 Bit) ( Download : Mac | Windows )
  4. Atlan Access Token



Step 1. Installing Power BI Atlan Connector & ODBC Driver

  1. Download the atlan.mez file from this link.
  2. Copy the atlan.mez file to the folder Documents/Power BI Desktop/Custom Connectors/directory. (If this path does not exist in the system by default, you can create one)
  3. You can also directly download the presto ODBC driver here. Mac | Windows 

    Install “Simba Presto 1.1.pkg” package



Step 2. Get Access Token from Atlan


  1. Go to Atlan and click on your name on the top right and then click on Profile
  2. Click on Personal Access Tokens
  3. Click on Generate New Token and a window will open where the tool needs to be chosen. Choose Power BI as the tool.
  4. On the next screen, fill up the Application Name. Click on Generate to move ahead. 



5. On the next screen, a token will be generated. Please copy this access token and save it on your system/share it with the relevant user (as required) as you would not be able to see it on Atlan again for security purposes. 


Step 3. Setting up the Power BI ODBC Connector


  1. Download the Presto ODBC Driver 64 bit from Mac | Windows 
  2. Install the Presto ODBC driver.
  3. Open the Start menu (or press the Windows key) and search/select ‘ODBC Data Source Administrator (64-bit)’
  4. Select Presto ODBC DSN, and press the Configure button.
  5. The window will open up. Fill up the following details in the given fields:
    1. Authentication Type: No Authentication
    2. User: Atlan API Key (Steps on how to generate this key are given above)
    3. Host: https://<instance> - api.atlan.com
      e.g. for experience.atlan.com, the host will be https://experience-api.atlan.com
    4. Port: 443
    5. Catalogue: hive
    6. Schema: default
    7. Within SSL options, select all the checkboxes
    8. Click the Test button and if successful, press Ok
    9. If the test fails, please check the following points: 
      1. If you have appropriate access to query the data
      2. If the generated access token is the correct
      3. Any spelling errors in host URL
      4. SSL Options have been checked



Step 4. Login into PowerBI to access Atlan catalog


Once you've completed all the steps above, open PowerBI in your device and follow steps given below to fetch your Atlan catalog here:

  1. Open PowerBI, click on File and go to Options & Settings.
  2. Click on Options and go to the Security option
  3. Inside Security, there is a Data Extensions section, which has two options, click on the second option (Allow any extension to load without validation or warning) and click OK.
  4. Restart your PowerBI
  5. Go to Get Data, select More and search for Atlan in the search box. You will see Atlan (Beta) as a connector. Select it and click on Connect.
  6. You will now be able to view the entire catalog with all the tables on Atlan. Any table can be selected and loaded in your PowerBI for you to start building a dashboard on top of it.
